On 28.07.2014 in the Center for prevention and information in Ruse, was held a student conference within which took part representative of Association BRTMI. The event was organized by the branch of Center “Nadja” in Ruse and was attended by students from different high schools: English Language School “Geo Milev”, German Language School “Friedrich Schiller” and European Language School “St. Constantine-Cyril the Philosopher”.
The aim of the conference was to examine students’ opinion about the current problems of the educational system, especially of those related to improving of students’ mental health and school climate. The participants introduced the audience with the current situation in their schools and discovered that happens very often school psychologists to perform functions that are not typical and are rather administrative. It became clear that for the majority of their peers as well as for the majority of the society, the role of the psychologist is incomprehensible and visiting a psychologist is still a taboo.
Another issue that the participants discussed was related to students’ participation in school processes by creating so-called “Student council”. The council will monitorand control the budgetary expenditures of the school, and organize events of different nature. The role of parents for improving the mental health of students was also mentioned. All participants agreed that parents’ meetings are obsolete and not productive because the only thing they do is to criticize children.
